The Sun Mountain Community School (SMCS) is a community of families and educators dedicated to cultivating the intellectual, social, emotional, physical and consciousness capacities of the developing human being. Our mission is to educate the whole child, using an age-appropriate approach to content and skills based on principles of Waldorf Education and the work of Rudolf Steiner. Our students engage in rigorous academics, develop connections to the natural world and moral discernment, and achieve an appreciation of themselves and others.

The state of New Mexico approved us for a K-8th grade charter school. However, it will take time to develop that. Here is our long term schedule:

Now - August 2025 - Implementation Year
2025-2026 - Open K-4th + 6th grades.
2026-2027 - Expand to K-7th grade.
2027-2028 - Expand to K-8th grade.

Winter :

• January 23rd: Interested Teacher’s Informational Meeting

• February 1st: Application window for Head of School closes

• February 15th: Storytelling Festival and Open House, SMCS Campus

• February 28th: Lottery Pull Party for K-4th & 6th grade, SMCS Campus

Spring :

• March: The Head of School is hired

• April: Phase One hiring (6 Lead Teachers, Office Administrator, and Special Ed. Director) application process begins.

• April: Phase One hiring completed

• May: Phase two hiring begins (staff)

• Recruitment continues until all seats are filled.

Summer :

• June: Phase two hiring continues (Subject teachers, Educational assistant)

• Campus readiness is finalized (fencing, classroom space distribution, playgrounds)

• Campus beautification.

• Teachers undergo required training.

• August: Our first day of school!
